Durham region schools to compete in FIRST “WHITE PINE” Battle of the Books at Oshawa Public Library
Area teens will be squaring off in a Battle of the Books Competition at the White Pine level on March 5, 2009. They join many other libraries and schools across Ontario who are encouraging teens share their knowledge and have friendly competition in this Battle of the Books. The White Pine booklist is sponsored by the Ontario Library Association’s Forest of Reading Programme.
Teen Librarian, Tiffany Balducci, feels that "Reading can be an organized sporting event! It is a lot of fun for schools to participate in friendly competition, answering questions about books that they have all read.”
The 2008 White Pine Book list was released last fall. Since then, local schools have been meeting in White Pine Book Clubs to discuss the books and vote on their favourite. The Battle of the Books will showcase area schools’ reading comprehension and knowledge of the books. It is a voluntary club.
Children, teens and adults can participate in the Forest of Reading program through reading groups in their public libraries and schools. Discover and vote for your favourite Canadian books, authors and illustrators! The Forest of Reading program is sponsored by the Ontario Library Association.
The Battle of the Books will take place at the McLaughlin Branch of Oshawa Public Library on Thursday, March 5 at 12:30 PM.
